History Of The Tribal Community Of Majuli Island | Different Community People Of Majuli

The term tribal has emanated from the word tribe. The term tribe may suggest the meaning of the social group. A tribe has an ancestor with a link through blood ties. The highest number of tribal population is found in Majuli Island. It can be said that 70% of the total population of Majuli Island is tribal. The short account of each tribal group of Majuli Island is given below-

The Mising Community: 

The Mising(Miri) is the second largest cluster of the Indo-Mongoloid individuals of Assam. They are living mainly in the districts of Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Sonitpur and Majuli. It's meaning is Mi-man, Sing-beautiful i.e. beautiful man. Most of the people are living on the riverside. For the safety of flood water, they build their houses 5 to 6 feet above the ground.  

Rice is the main food of the Mising. Like other tribal women, the Mising women are expert in weaving. "Kebang" is an important social organization of the Mising which is compared with the Village Panchayat. They have got two systems of marriage one is formal and the other informal. In the case of religion, they worship different spirits.  

They celebrate the Ali-Ai-Ligang, Po'rag, Arok, Bohag Bihu(Rangali Bihu), Kati Bihu(Kangali Bihu), Magh Bihu(Bhogali Bihu) Nora Chinga and many more. The Mising language is rich in oral literature. This language is prevailing in the lower primary school situated in the Mising dominated areas.

The Deori Community:

The Deori community is one of the four subdivisions of the chutiyas. They are-Hindu  Chutiya, Ahom Chutiya, Borahi Chutiya and Deori Chutiya. They are conjointly a crucial branch of the Indo-Mongoloid stock. The Deoris originally settled on the banks of the watercourse river of the Majuli Island. Their society is patriarchal. Father is the head of the family. Deoris worship "Shiva-Mahadev" and mother immortal "Parvati". The "Bisu" and "Sawania Puja" are the main festivals of Deori Community. They speak the Assamese language.
