Assam's first heliport has come up at Kerelagaon, Garamur in the Majuli Island district. Assam Chief Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the first heliport of Assam and a Guesthouse in the riverine island Majuli on 4th February 2021. The heliport can handle the simultaneous landing of three choppers with an aided facility of accommodation for the guest. The heliport was constructed at an expenditure of Rs 50 lakh with a Guesthouse at an expenditure of Rs 50 lakh under the untied fund of the State Government.

Assam's CM Shri Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the newly created heliport in the Majuli district and he said that- "the heliport was built with an aim to boost tourism in Majuli, which has a distinct identity as the world's largest riverine island. He said that the Assam Government made dedicated efforts to put Majuli Island as an important tourist destination of the world and Mr. Sonowal hoped that the new heliport would significantly facilitate tourist flow to Majuli"

The newly created heliport, once operational- will go a long way in attracting domestic and foreign tourists and the chopper service will help tourists and visitors because swift and smooth communication remains an issue for most visiting people to Majuli. The heliport will also offer a choice to Majuli officials who need to scout for an appropriate place for VVIP landing and build a short-lived helipad, especially during election campaigning and ministerial visits.

Sources said that though the heliport is prepared to use, the operation of a billboard chopper service will still take a while. An official said that- An Assam-based company, Brahmaputra Aviation, is trying to secure a license to operate the chopper service. The company has approached the Majuli district administration for a no-objection certificate after which they will move to the director-general, civil aviation, to seek a license. Moreover, a passenger lounge and a check-in counter need to be built. So it will still take a while.
